Supreme Court Steps In to Ensure Justice for RG Kar Victim in Kolkata

The Supreme Court of India has taken action regarding the spread of photos and the identity of the RG Kar rape and murder victim on social media. The victim’s father expressed trust in the court and the CBI for justice.

During a hearing, Advocate Vrinda Grover informed the court about social media posts revealing the victim’s name and photos, describing the situation as alarming. A YouTube movie based on the incident and AI-generated content were also highlighted.

Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani raised concerns about a police officer revealing the victim’s identity. The court reiterated its directive for all social media platforms to remove posts disclosing the victim’s identity.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology would monitor and remove unauthorized posts. The court reviewed the CBI’s status report, noting significant leads and financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Investigation Insights

The CBI’s report highlighted that the victim’s injuries were worsened by her braces and glasses. Senior Advocate Indira Jaisingh revealed that four individuals, including elected council members, were present at the crime scene. Advocate Karuna Nundy urged the court to suspend individuals involved in financial irregularities until the investigation is complete.

The Supreme Court instructed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to update on the employment status of individuals under investigation. Senior Advocate Rakesh Dwivedi assured that the state government would take appropriate action based on the CBI’s information.

After extensive deliberation, the Supreme Court adjourned the case for further hearing after the Dussehra vacation.
