The Supreme Court of India has asked the central government to respond to a plea regarding the cancellation of the third round of All India Quota (AIQ) counselling for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduates (NEET-PG). This plea was filed by around 50 candidates who are requesting a fresh round of counselling.
The petitioners claim that some candidates received unfair advantages during the initial counselling round, which prevented others from securing seats they were eligible for. They argue that starting AIQ Round III before the completion of State Round II counselling violates a previous court order in the Ashish Ranjan case.
A Bench of Justices B R Gavai and K Vinod Chandran has issued a notice to the Union Health Ministry's Medical Counsel Committee (MCC) to address these concerns. The petitioners argue that candidates from certain states were allowed to participate in AIQ Round III before their State Round II counselling was completed, which they claim is unfair and violates the rights of other candidates.
The plea emphasizes that the MCC should have waited for all states to finish Round II counselling before commencing AIQ Round III.
