Supreme Court Reviews Safety After Doctor’s Tragic Incident at RG Kar Medical College
New Delhi, India – The Supreme Court of India is closely examining the safety measures at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata following the tragic rape and murder of a PG trainee doctor. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is overseeing the case.
The court has asked the National Task Force to submit a report on safety and other issues for professionals at the hospital. This includes steps to prevent gender-based violence and ensure a dignified working environment for doctors.
During the hearing, the court questioned the West Bengal government about the slow progress in installing CCTV cameras, constructing toilets, and setting up biometric systems. Senior Advocate Dwivedi explained that floods caused delays but assured completion by October 15.
Advocate Vrinda Grover, representing the victim’s parents, raised concerns about social media posts revealing the victim’s identity. The court reiterated its order to remove such posts from all platforms. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will appoint an official to monitor and remove unauthorized posts.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also involved, providing substantial leads on the case. The CBI’s report highlighted both the rape incident and financial irregularities at the hospital. Senior Advocate Indira Jaisingh mentioned that some suspects are elected council members, and Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy called for their temporary suspension during the investigation.
The Supreme Court has adjourned the case for further hearing after the Dussehra vacation.
