Supreme Court Reviews Jharkhand’s Plea on Illegal Immigration Investigation
The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the Central government regarding a plea from the Jharkhand government. This plea challenges an interim order from the High Court that called for a fact-finding committee to investigate allegations of illegal immigration from Bangladesh into Jharkhand. The committee includes officers from the Central government.
A bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Ahsanuddin Amanullah has requested responses from both the Centre and the petitioner involved in the High Court case. The matter is scheduled for a hearing on December 3. Until then, Jharkhand has the option not to appoint its members to the committee.
The Jharkhand government is appealing against the High Court’s order from September 20, which established the committee. The state argues that a report from Deputy Commissioners of six districts—Godda, Jamtara, Pakur, Dumka, Sahibganj, and Deoghar—found no illegal migration, except for two cases in Sahibganj, which are being managed by state authorities.
The High Court’s decision was in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) expressing concerns about the declining population of certain tribal communities in the mentioned districts. The petitioner claimed that these indigenous tribes are facing population decreases due to alleged forceful conversions by Bangladeshi Muslims.
