Supreme Court Questions Delhi Officials on Tree Felling in Delhi Ridge
The Supreme Court of India has asked key officials from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to clarify when Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena was informed about tree felling in the Delhi Ridge forest area. The court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is examining discrepancies in the timeline of events.
Former DDA Vice-Chairman Subhashish Panda, now with the Prime Minister’s Office, reportedly informed LG Saxena about the tree cutting in April. However, Saxena’s affidavit claims he learned of the need for court permission in March, after the felling began in February. He also stated he was only informed of the actual tree cutting in June.
The court has requested an additional affidavit from the DDA Vice Chairperson to address these inconsistencies and has ordered the production of all original records. The case involves a contempt petition against Panda for the felling of approximately 1100 trees without proper authorization.
