Supreme Court Petition Seeks Expert Committee to Tackle Cyber Frauds

Notable Cybercrime Incidents
One incident involved retired Chief Justice of India RM Lodha, who was tricked into transferring Rs 1 lakh through emails from a fake account. Another scam involved a fraudster impersonating Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, asking for Rs 500 under false pretenses.
Recently, a cybercrime gang posed as Central Bureau of Investigation officers and created a fake virtual courtroom to deceive Vardhman Group head SP Oswal of Rs 7 crore. Additionally, retired Bombay High Court Chief Justice Ramesh Devkinandan Dhanuka lost Rs 49,998 after being tricked into updating his PAN card details.
Rising Cybercrime Concerns
The petition emphasizes the growing threat of cybercrime, citing National Crime Records Bureau data showing an increase in cases from 21,796 in 2017 to 27,248 in 2018. It calls for strengthening the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008, to better define cybercrimes and enhance cybersecurity measures.
The central government, including the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, are named in the petition as parties responsible for addressing these issues.
