Supreme Court Orders Removal of Victim’s Identity in RG Kar Hospital Case

The Supreme Court of India has directed all social media and electronic media platforms to remove the name, photographs, and video clips of the deceased in the RG Kar Hospital case. This decision was made by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra.

The court noted that the identity of the victim had been published on various platforms, which led to the issuance of an injunctive order. The court stated, “We accordingly direct that all references to the name of the deceased in the above incident, photographs and video clips shall forthwith be removed from all social media platforms and electronic media in compliance with this order.”

The case involved a petition highlighting the circulation of photographs and video clips of the deceased’s body on social media and electronic platforms. The petition raised concerns about the widespread dissemination of the victim’s identity following the murder and alleged rape at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta.
