Supreme Court Orders Removal of Victim’s Photos and Ensures Safety for Doctors
The Supreme Court of India has ordered the immediate removal of all photos of a victim from social media. The court emphasized that no action should be taken against doctors if they return to work by tomorrow 5 PM, but warned of disciplinary action if they fail to do so.
Senior Advocate Geeta Luthra mentioned that doctors are facing threats. The court directed that necessary conditions be created for the safety and security of doctors in hospitals, including the availability of toilet facilities for both male and female doctors.
The court raised concerns about the post-mortem report in a case of alleged rape and murder. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government, pointed out several issues, including the improper handling of a vaginal swab. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta noted that the post-mortem report did not mention the time it was conducted, which is crucial in such cases.
Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud asked SG Mehta whether the necessary documents were available when the body was sent for the post-mortem. Sibal requested additional time to submit the required documents. Mehta confirmed that the documents were not included in the files provided to them.
The court directed the CBI to submit an updated status report by next week and will review the matter on September 17. Sibal informed the court that 23 people died due to a lack of medical attention when doctors were unavailable. The court also inquired about the proximity of the residence of the Principal of RG Kar Medical College to the hospital and the registration of the report for the unnatural death.
SG Mehta confirmed that four video clips related to the incident had been handed over to the CBI. The CBI is sending the samples to AIIMS and other forensic labs for further examination. The Supreme Court instructed that security be tightened at RG Kar Medical College, with accommodations provided for all CISF personnel near the hospital. CISF personnel were instructed to ensure that no one is allowed inside emergency wards without proper identification.
