Supreme Court Orders Removal of Victim’s Identity in Kolkata Medical College Case
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has instructed social media platforms in India to follow a Supreme Court order to remove the identity of the deceased victim from the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder incident in Kolkata.
Supreme Court’s Directive
On August 20, 2024, the Supreme Court issued an order in the case titled Kinnori Ghosh @ Anr. versus Union of India & Ors, mandating the removal of the victim’s name, photographs, and video clips from all social media and electronic media. This decision was made to address concerns about the spread of sensitive material related to the incident.
Protecting Privacy and Dignity
The Supreme Court emphasized the need to protect the privacy and dignity of the individuals involved. The Court stated, “This Court is constrained to issue an injunctive order since the social and electronic media have proceeded to publish the identity of the deceased and photographs of the dead body after the recovery of the body.”
In compliance with this order, MeitY has stressed the importance of adhering to the directive and has urged social media companies to take immediate action to ensure compliance. Failure to comply with the Supreme Court’s order may result in legal consequences and further regulatory action.
