Supreme Court Orders Quick Decision on Irfan Solanki’s Arson Case Appeal

The Supreme Court of India has instructed the Allahabad High Court to make a decision within 10 days regarding Irfan Solanki’s request to pause his conviction in an arson case. Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan emphasized the need for a swift resolution. Solanki, a former Samajwadi Party MLA, was convicted by a local court in Uttar Pradesh for setting a woman’s house on fire in Kanpur, resulting in a seven-year prison sentence. He has appealed to the Allahabad High Court to halt his conviction and sentence, with the next hearing scheduled for November 6. Solanki, who was elected in 2022 from Sisamau in Kanpur, was disqualified following his conviction. In June, the MP MLA court in Kanpur sentenced Solanki, his brother Rizwan, and three others to seven years in prison and fined them Rs 20,000 each. The charges stem from a complaint by Nazir Fatima, who accused them of conspiring to burn her house to seize her land.
