Supreme Court Orders NTA to Publish NEET-UG 2024 Results with Masked Identities
The Supreme Court of India has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to publish the NEET-UG 2024 results on its website, ensuring that the identities of students are masked. The results should be released city and centre-wise by Saturday noon.
This decision follows petitions from students who urged the court to direct the NTA to publish the results to bring transparency. The court stated, “The petitioners have submitted that it would be appropriate if the results of the NEET-UG 24 exam are published on the website to bring about some transparency on the centre-wise marks obtained by candidates. We direct the NTA to publish the marks obtained by students in the NEET-UG 2024 exam while ensuring that the identity of the students is masked. The results should be declared in relation to each centre and city separately.”
The bench, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will continue hearing the pleas alleging paper leaks and malpractices in the NEET-UG 2024 exams on July 22. The court held a day-long hearing on the matter, addressing concerns about question paper leaks, compensatory marks, and anomalies in the exam.
NEET-UG, conducted by NTA, is the pathway for admissions into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in government and private institutions across India. The 2024 exam was held on May 5 across 4,750 centres, with around 24 lakh candidates appearing.
During the hearing, the court questioned the NTA about the alleged paper leaks and malpractices. The NTA explained that students could only change their exam city, not the centre, and that centres were allotted just two days before the exam. The Solicitor General informed the court that the CBI had investigated the entire process, ensuring a seven-layer safety system for the question papers.
The petitioners’ counsel argued that there was a systemic failure by the NTA, citing instances of question papers being transported inappropriately and leaked on social media. The court questioned the feasibility of mass paper leaks and the motives behind them, with the Solicitor General explaining that the accused aimed to profit rather than cause widespread disruption.
The court will continue to examine the evidence and arguments presented before making a final decision on the matter.
