Supreme Court of India Rejects Petition on Noise Pollution During Festivals in Maharashtra

The Supreme Court of India has declined a petition seeking to curb noise pollution and regulate the use of laser beams and loudspeakers in public spaces during festivals in Maharashtra. The bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, rejected the plea, noting that the Ganapati puja festival had already concluded in the state.

On September 17, the court pointed out that the Bombay High Court had allowed the petitioner to make a representation before the concerned authorities. The appeal was filed by ‘Akhil Bhartiya Grahak Panchayat’ against the Bombay High Court’s April 20 order, which disposed of the PIL against the usage of laser beams and loud sound systems during religious processions and other ceremonies. The High Court had stated that the petitioner could submit a representation to the appropriate authority or State government to take measures for regulating the use of light laser beams.
