Supreme Court of India Grants Bail to Man in Counterfeit Currency Case

The Supreme Court of India recently granted bail to a man accused of possessing counterfeit currency. The court, led by Justices JB Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan, emphasized that criminals are shaped by various factors and deserve a chance at redemption. The court noted that human potential is inherently good and that no one should be written off as beyond redemption.

The court criticized the delay in the man’s trial, which had been paused for four years, and highlighted the right to a speedy trial under Article 21 of the Constitution. The man, arrested in February 2020, must stay within Mumbai and report to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) office or police station every fifteen days.

The man was found with 1,193 counterfeit Indian currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination in Andheri, Mumbai. The counterfeit notes were allegedly smuggled from Pakistan. The Supreme Court noted that two other co-accused in the case were already out on bail.
