New Delhi [India], July 16: Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kumar has stepped down from hearing the bail plea of Abhishek Boinpally, a businessman from Hyderabad accused in the Delhi Liquor Policy money laundering case. The case was initially listed before a bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar.

After Judge Sanjay Kumar recused himself, Justice Sanjiv Khanna directed that the plea be relisted in the first week of August. The court also stated that the interim bail granted to Boinpally will continue until the next hearing date. Boinpally was first granted five weeks of interim bail on March 20, which was later extended until today.

Boinpally has also challenged a Delhi High Court order that refused his plea against his arrest in the case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has charged Boinpally along with several others, including Vijay Nair, Sharath Reddy, Binoy Babu, Amit Arora, and various companies. The ED has also arrested political figures such as AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, and BRS leader K Kavitha.

The ED and the CBI allege that irregularities were committed in modifying the excise policy, including undue favours to licence holders, waiving or reducing licence fees, and extending the L-1 licence without proper approval. The beneficiaries allegedly diverted illegal gains to the accused officials and made false entries in their books to avoid detection.
