Supreme Court Halts Demolition in Bahraich Violence Case
On October 22, the Uttar Pradesh government assured the Supreme Court of India that no action would be taken until the next day regarding demolition notices issued against buildings linked to individuals allegedly involved in the October 13 Bahraich violence. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan agreed to hear the application seeking protection from these demolitions. Senior advocate CU Singh requested an early hearing, and the bench scheduled it for the following day, instructing Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj to delay any action. Nataraj confirmed that no action would be taken until then. The Allahabad High Court is also involved in the matter, having granted 15 more days for affected individuals to respond to the notices. The Supreme Court had previously issued an interim order preventing demolitions without prior permission, except for encroachments on public spaces. The court is considering petitions against demolition actions used as punitive measures against accused individuals.
