Supreme Court Halts Demolition Notices in Bahraich Violence Case
In New Delhi, the Uttar Pradesh government has assured the Supreme Court that no action will be taken until tomorrow regarding demolition notices issued against buildings linked to individuals allegedly involved in the Bahraich violence on October 13. This violence occurred during a Durga idol immersion procession, resulting in the death of Ram Gopal Mishra.
Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police, Prashant Kumar, reported that five people were arrested in connection with the violence. Two of them were injured during an encounter, while the other three were taken into custody. The situation is now under control.
On October 18, the Public Works Department issued a demolition notice for Abdul Hameed’s residence, one of the accused, citing illegal construction. In response, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court by three petitioners through advocate Mrigank Prabhakar, challenging the demolition notices. They argue that the demolition is punitive and a misuse of the “unauthorized construction” defense to bypass interim protective orders from the court.
The petitioners claim the demolition notices are motivated by malice due to the quick actions taken by the authorities following the communal incident. They believe the notices are based on the alleged involvement of the property owners in the violence.
