Supreme Court Grants Bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Corruption Case

New Delhi, India – The Supreme Court of India has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a corruption case related to the alleged excise policy scam. The decision was made by a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, who stated that prolonged incarceration would be an unjust deprivation of liberty.

The court set the bail amount at Rs 10 lakh and imposed conditions on Kejriwal’s release. He is not allowed to make public comments about the case and must attend all trial court hearings unless exempted.

Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, in a separate judgment, criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for arresting Kejriwal, questioning the timing and justification of the arrest. He emphasized that bail is the rule and jail is an exception, stating that the process of trial should not become a form of harassment.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had upheld Kejriwal’s arrest as legal, citing sufficient evidence and the potential influence Kejriwal could have on witnesses. Kejriwal was initially arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March 2024 in connection with a money laundering probe related to the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy 2021-22. He was later arrested by the CBI in June 2024 while still in ED custody.
