Supreme Court Grants Bail to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal
New Delhi, India – The Supreme Court of India has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a corruption case related to the alleged excise policy scam. Congress Leader Pramod Tiwari’s View
Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari commented, “First Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren got the bail and now it is Arvind Kejriwal… The Supreme Court found this case to be bailable… The central government is misusing central agencies as the frontal organisations against the Opposition parties. There is an environment of fear in the country… This is a unanimous decision of the Supreme Court and we welcome it.”
Details of the Case
The Supreme Court granted bail to Kejriwal, stating that prolonged incarceration amounts to unjust deprivation of liberty. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, 2024, in connection with a money laundering probe related to the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy 2021-22. He was later arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on June 26, 2024, while still in ED custody.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court had upheld Kejriwal’s arrest as legal, stating that there was sufficient evidence and no malice in the CBI’s actions. The High Court noted that Kejriwal’s influence on witnesses was significant, as they could only muster the courage to testify after his arrest.
