Supreme Court Forms Task Force for Doctors’ Safety After Kolkata Incident

The Supreme Court of India has established a 10-member National Task Force to recommend measures for preventing violence and ensuring safe working conditions for medical professionals. This decision follows the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, which sparked nationwide protests.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) welcomed the Supreme Court’s intervention and announced its intention to work with the committee on safety and security. However, the IMA continues to demand a central law for the protection of medical professionals through an ordinance. A virtual meeting of state presidents and state secretaries has been scheduled for 9 PM today.

The task force, which includes Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, has been directed to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months. The court also instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a status report on the investigation into the rape case and asked the West Bengal government to report on the mob attack incident at RG Kar Hospital on August 15.

Meanwhile, the CBI continues its investigation into the rape and murder case, with permission to conduct a polygraph test on the arrested accused. The CBI team has also conducted 3D laser mapping in the emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

In response to the incident, prominent artists from the Bengal music industry, including actor Saheb Chatterjee and radio personality Mir Afsar Ali, protested on Monday, demanding justice for the victim.
