Supreme Court Forms Task Force for Medical Professionals’ Safety After Kolkata Incident
New Delhi, India – The Supreme Court has created a 10-member National Task Force to improve safety and working conditions for medical professionals. This decision follows the tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, where a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered.
Dr Anil Kohli’s Response
Dr Anil Kohli, a Padma Awardee and former President of the Dental Medical Council, praised the Supreme Court’s decision. He emphasized the need for safe workplaces for medical professionals who dedicate their lives to society.
IMA’s Support
Dr R V Asokan, National President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), also supported the court’s decision, calling it a “good intervention.” The IMA had previously written to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, urging for stronger laws to protect doctors and healthcare workers from violence.

Next Steps
The Supreme Court has directed the task force to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months. Additionally, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government have been asked to provide status reports on the investigation and the mob attack incident at RG Kar hospital.
