Supreme Court Forms Task Force After Doctor’s Tragic Death in Kolkata

West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to create a National Task Force to prevent violence against medical professionals and ensure safe working conditions. He demanded action against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for incidents on August 9 and 14, involving the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata.

Adhikari stated, “I welcome this step by the Supreme Court. The Court has issued an interim order so that such an incident doesn’t repeat. We also expect that the incident that took place on August 9 and also on August 14, by the TMC goons – to vandalise the peaceful protest, action must be taken against it also, in the next hearing. It’s all happening by a shared role of the state govt, and Kolkata police…”

He added, “Kolkata police has not allowed final rites of the victim in a manner as per Hindu rituals and told the incident a suicide to family members. So strict action should be taken on this as well during the next hearing of the Supreme Court.”

The Supreme Court emphasized that the nation cannot wait for another tragic incident to bring about change. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, criticized the West Bengal government for waiting three hours to register the FIR and for allowing the deceased’s name and graphic images to be circulated on social media.

On August 9, 2024, a thirty-one-year-old postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Kolkata, who was on a thirty-six-hour duty shift, was murdered and allegedly raped inside the seminar room of the hospital.
