Supreme Court Extends Protection for Actor Siddique in Rape Case

The Supreme Court of India has extended interim protection from arrest for Malayalam actor Siddique, who is involved in a rape case. Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma granted Siddique relief for an additional two weeks. The complaint against Siddique was filed eight years after the alleged incident, which the Kerala government explained as a result of the victim needing time to gather courage. Siddique sought anticipatory bail from the Supreme Court after the Kerala High Court dismissed his plea, leading to a lookout notice by Kerala Police suspecting he might have fled. The case is under investigation by a Special Investigation Team in Kerala, with charges of rape and criminal intimidation filed by a young actor. Siddique has denied these allegations. The Malayalam film industry is currently facing a wave of “Me Too” allegations, prompting Siddique to resign from his position as general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), followed by the resignation of the entire executive committee. The Justice Hema Committee report, released on August 19, highlighted widespread harassment and exploitation in the industry.
