Supreme Court Disturbed by CBI Report on RG Kar Medical College Incident
The Supreme Court of India expressed concern over the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) report on the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, noted discrepancies in the investigation but emphasized the need for confidentiality to protect the probe.
The court was hearing a suo motu petition regarding the incident and highlighted that the CBI is actively working to uncover the truth. The court also sought a status report on financial irregularities at the college and asked the CBI to consider inputs from the victim’s father. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured that the CBI would keep the victim’s family informed.
Despite concerns raised by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal about the implications of live streaming the proceedings, the court refused to halt it, citing public interest. Sibal, representing the state of West Bengal, mentioned threats to lawyers and women in his chamber. The court assured that it would intervene if any threats were made.
