Supreme Court Dismisses Maharashtra’s Appeal on Rhea Chakraborty’s Look-Out Circulars

The Supreme Court of India has dismissed an appeal by the Maharashtra government challenging the Bombay High Court’s decision to quash Look-Out Circulars (LOC) against actress Rhea Chakraborty, her father Lt Colonel Indrajit Chakraborty, and her brother Showik Chakraborty. These LOCs were issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the investigation into actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.

Supreme Court’s Decision

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan labeled the CBI’s petition as “frivolous,” suggesting it was filed due to the high-profile nature of the accused. Justice Gavai warned the CBI about filing such petitions, stating that both Rhea and her family have strong societal ties. The bench ultimately dismissed the CBI’s plea.

Background

The LOCs were initially issued after Sushant Singh Rajput’s family filed an FIR in Patna, requesting an investigation into his death. However, the Bombay High Court quashed these LOCs in February 2024, citing the CBI’s failure to provide adequate reasons for their issuance.
