Supreme Court Demands Explanation from Delhi LG VK Saxena on Tree Felling in Southern Ridge

Supreme Court Seeks Details on Tree Felling in Delhi

Background

The Supreme Court of India has asked VK Saxena, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor and chairperson of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), to provide a detailed affidavit regarding the cutting down of trees in the southern Ridge area of Delhi. This request was made by a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra.

Details of the Case

The court’s order is part of a contempt case against Subhasish Panda, Vice Chairman of the DDA, concerning the felling of approximately 1100 trees for road widening. The court wants Saxena to disclose any disciplinary actions or criminal prosecutions against officials involved by October 22.

Site Visit and Clarifications

During a site visit on February 3, Saxena aimed to expedite road widening for better hospital access for paramilitary forces. However, the court found the records unclear and asked Saxena to clarify if he was informed about the need for court permission to cut the trees. Saxena must also explain how the felled timber was managed and whether it was inventoried.

Accountability and Next Steps

The court emphasized the need for accountability regarding any omissions or commissions by officials or third parties. The matter is scheduled for a hearing on October 22. The case originated from a plea by Delhi resident Bindu Kapurea and an NGO, alleging that trees were cut despite a court order prohibiting it.
