Supreme Court Criticizes Haryana and Punjab Over Stubble Burning
In Kaithal, Haryana, and parts of Punjab, several incidents of stubble burning have been reported despite the Supreme Court’s criticism of the state governments for inadequate action. Stubble burning was observed in Kaithal district, Karnal-Jind road, Hardo Putli village in Amritsar, and Handiaya Village in Barnala. This practice contributes significantly to air pollution, releasing harmful smoke into the atmosphere.
On October 23, the Supreme Court criticized the Haryana and Punjab governments for their lack of action against stubble burning, emphasizing the citizens’ right to a clean environment. Justices Abhay S Oka, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, and Augustine George Masih expressed disappointment over the nominal fines imposed and the absence of prosecutions.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced a subsidy of Rs 1,000 per acre for farmers who refrain from burning stubble, with plans to increase this amount. He highlighted the state’s efforts in providing necessary equipment for stubble management, which the Supreme Court had previously acknowledged.
Meanwhile, Punjab farmers have called for a permanent solution, citing stubble burning as a necessity. The Supreme Court plans to address air pollution issues, including those from transport and industrial activities, after Diwali.
