Supreme Court Criticizes CAQM’s Efforts on Air Pollution Control

The Supreme Court of India has expressed disappointment with the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) for its lack of action in implementing directions to control air pollution. The court noted that CAQM has not initiated any prosecutions and held its last meeting on August 29. The Supreme Court has directed the states of Punjab and Haryana to comply with CAQM’s directions and submit an affidavit within a week. The case is scheduled for a hearing on October 16.

Stubble Burning Concerns

As the stubble burning season begins, CAQM has deployed ‘flying squads’ in several districts of Haryana and Punjab to monitor and report incidents of paddy stubble burning. These squads will provide daily reports to the Commission and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on the situation and measures taken to prevent further burning.

Recent Developments

The Supreme Court’s criticism comes after a recent increase in stubble burning incidents in Punjab and Haryana, raising concerns as winter approaches in Delhi. The Ministry of Environment has stated that the flying squads will be active from October 1 to November 30, 2024, in hotspot districts where stubble burning is prevalent.
