Supreme Court Allows Teesta Setalvad to Attend Amsterdam Film Festival

The Supreme Court of India has granted permission to activist Teesta Setalvad to travel to Amsterdam for the International Documentary Film Festival from November 14 to November 24. Setalvad, who is accused of fabricating evidence in the 2002 Godhra riots cases, will attend the festival as the producer of the documentary film ‘Cycle Mahesh’.

A bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan approved her request, applying the same conditions as her previous travel to Malaysia. The Gujarat government, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, did not oppose her plea. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Setalvad, requested the release of her passport for visa processing.

Setalvad is currently on bail related to allegations of conspiring to defame the State of Gujarat and its then Chief Minister Narendra Modi over the 2002 riots. She was arrested in June 2022 but was granted regular bail by the Supreme Court in 2023 after her appeal against the Gujarat High Court’s decision.
