Supreme Court Allows Punjab Panchayat Elections to Continue
The Supreme Court of India has decided not to halt the ongoing panchayat elections in Punjab. The decision was made by a bench including Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra. They emphasized that stopping the elections after they have started would cause chaos.
Judicial Restraint in Election Matters
The bench highlighted the importance of judicial restraint in election-related issues, stating that staying the elections is a serious matter. They refused to issue an interim order to stop the polling, which began on Tuesday morning.
High Court’s Role and Legal Challenges
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had previously lifted a stay on the elections, dismissing around 800 petitions alleging irregularities. The elections are being held to elect ‘sarpanch’ and ‘panch’ for villages, with voting taking place from 8 am to 4 pm.
Participation and Legal Proceedings
Voters in Mohali and Ludhiana have been actively participating, and the process has been peaceful. The High Court also mandated videography of the elections. Despite the court’s decision, attorneys plan to challenge it in the Supreme Court.

The elections are for 13,237 ‘Sarpanches’ and 83,437 ‘Panches’. Advocate Hakam Singh mentioned that nearly 1,000 writ petitions were filed, but most were dismissed by the High Court.
