Sunil Raut Faces FIR for Comments Against Rival Candidate

In Mumbai, Maharashtra, an FIR has been filed against Sunil Raut, a candidate from the Shiv Sena (UBT) and brother of Sanjay Raut. The FIR is due to his alleged objectionable remarks about Suvarna Karanje, a woman candidate from the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The FIR cites Sections 79, 351(2), and 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Sunil Raut, who previously won the Vikhroli assembly seat in 2014 and 2019, is contesting again against Karanje and Vishwajeet Dholam from the MNS party. As the elections for 288 Assembly seats in Maharashtra approach, both the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) are ramping up their campaigns.

The Mahayuti alliance includes the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and Ajit Pawar-led NCP. Meanwhile, the Baramati constituency will see a family contest between NCP leader Ajit Pawar and his nephew Yugendra Pawar. Previously, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Supriya Sule defeated Sunetra Pawar by 1.5 lakh votes in Baramati.

The Maharashtra elections are scheduled for November 20, with vote counting on November 23. In the 2019 elections, the BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena 56, and Congress 44. In 2014, the BJP secured 122 seats, Shiv Sena 63, and Congress 42.
