Sunil Chhetri Becomes All-Time Leading Goalscorer in Indian Super League
Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri has added another feather to his cap by becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in the Indian Super League (ISL). Chhetri scored his 64th ISL goal from the penalty spot, helping Bengaluru FC secure a 3-0 win over defending champions Mohun Bagan SG at the Sree Kanteerava stadium.
The 40-year-old’s goal was his 57th for Bengaluru FC, with the remaining seven scored for Mumbai City FC during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Chhetri, who retired from international football in June, has continued to excel in the ISL, netting his third goal of the 2024-25 season.
After the game, Chhetri expressed his happiness over the win, attributing his success to his team. He said, “I am really happy to win the game. Whatever goals I have scored are because of the team I have played with. It has been a long journey with Bengaluru FC in the ISL. But I am just happy that we won the game. When the season ends, we will see how many goals I get, but for now, it is all about three points.”
Chhetri also assisted Suresh Singh for the second goal and completed 10 of his 16 passes, creating two chances. Goals from Edgar Mendez, Suresh, and Chhetri ensured maximum points for Bengaluru FC, who have made their best-ever start to an ISL campaign. The team sits at the top of the standings with nine points from three matches, having scored seven goals and conceded none.
Bengaluru FC will play their first away game of the season on Wednesday against Mumbai City FC at the Mumbai Football Arena.
