Indian field hockey player Sukhjeet Singh shared his thoughts on the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy, which starts on September 8. The Indian team will miss their legendary goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who retired after the Olympics. However, Sukhjeet expressed confidence in goalkeepers Krishan Bahadur Pathak and Suraj Karkera to continue the team’s strong performance.

India, the most successful team in the history of the competition with four titles, won the 2023 edition by defeating Malaysia 4-3 in the finals. This year, India will start their campaign against China on September 8, followed by matches against Japan, Malaysia, Korea, and Pakistan. The top four teams will advance to the semi-finals on September 16, with the final scheduled for September 17.

Sukhjeet praised Sreejesh’s contributions and said, “Sreejesh bhai is a legend. What he did for the country over so many years, is a big deal. We will miss him. But we trust our goalkeepers, Krishan and Suraj to perform well for us, like Sreejesh did.”

He also mentioned that the team is preparing well at the SAI Bengaluru and is looking forward to securing back-to-back titles. The team is working on improving their performance, especially in defense, striking, and penalty conversion.

Sukhjeet highlighted the role of skipper Harmanpreet Singh, calling him a “world-class drag flicker” and praised his performance in the Olympics, where he was the top scorer with 10 goals. He also appreciated the efforts of coach Craig Fulton in pushing and encouraging the players.

Looking ahead to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, Sukhjeet expressed optimism about winning a gold medal, saying, “We will try to get a gold in the LA2028 Olympics.”
