Sudhan Das to Run for Rajya Sabha Bye-Election from Tripura
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), Tripura State Committee, has decided to field former MLA Sudhan Das for the upcoming Rajya Sabha bye-election from Tripura. The election is scheduled for September 3, 2024.
About Sudhan Das
Sudhan Das, aged 64, is a prominent Dalit leader and a member of the CPI(M) Tripura State Secretariat. He has served as an MLA from the Rajnagar (SC) Assembly Constituency in South Tripura six times. He is also the General Secretary of the Tripura Tapashili Jati Samanyaya Samiti.
The Election
Das will be competing against Rajib Bhattacharjee, the BJP state president. The Rajya Sabha seat became vacant after Biplab Kumar Deb resigned to contest and win the West Tripura Lok Sabha seat.
Election Schedule
The Election Commission has announced that the last date for making notifications is August 21, with scrutiny of nominations on August 22. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is August 26 for some states and August 27 for others. Polling will take place on September 3 from 9 am to 4 pm, with vote counting at 5 pm the same day.
