Students Protest in Delhi Over Coaching Centre Deaths

Students in Delhi have been protesting for seven days following the deaths of three civil services aspirants at Rau’s IAS Circle due to basement flooding. The protestors demand clarity on the casualties and accountability for the drainage system.

The incident occurred on July 27, when heavy rain caused water to flood the basement library at Rau’s IAS Circle, damaging the biometric entry and exit point. The victims were Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nivin Dalwin from Kerala.

A UPSC aspirant and protestor, Ashwini, stated, “We want clarity through the institute and CCTV footage regarding the actual number of casualties, the number of deaths, and those who were injured.” Another student, Shivam, alleged that political parties are trying to politicize the issue and questioned the Municipal Commissioner’s accountability for the drainage system.

The Delhi High Court has transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has proposed setting up four public libraries in memory of the deceased students in Rajinder Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Patel Nagar, and Ber Sarai. Mayor Oberoi said, “Nothing can fulfill the loss that Delhi feels, but we are trying to improve public reading spaces for students.”

So far, Delhi police have arrested seven people, including the owner and coordinator of the coaching centre, and charged them with culpable homicide. The MCD has sealed the basements of several coaching centres in the area, citing violations of building bye-laws.
