Students Protest Against Dr. Sandip Ghosh’s Reappointment at Calcutta National Medical College
On August 13, students at Calcutta National Medical College in Kolkata protested the reappointment of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College. The protest occurred during a visit by West Bengal minister Javed Ahmed Khan and TMC MLA Swarna Kamal.
Dr. Ghosh had resigned from his previous post but was reassigned to Calcutta National Medical College shortly after. Students expressed their discontent, calling the reappointment unethical and demanding justice from the minister. They raised ‘Go Back’ slogans for Dr. Ghosh, fearing a repeat of the tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College.
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has called for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services in response to the sexual assault and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. The Outpatient Department at RG Kar Medical College was shut, leaving patients uncertain about the availability of services.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded a thorough investigation and punishment for the culprits. They have also called for improved safety measures for doctors, especially women, in the workplace. The IMA has written to Union Minister JP Nadda, urging for a detailed inquiry and the implementation of security measures and laws to prevent violence against doctors.
