Students Meet MCD Commissioner After Tragic Deaths in Old Rajinder Nagar

A delegation of students from Old Rajinder Nagar met with the Municipal Corporation Development (MCD) Commissioner today. This meeting followed protests by UPSC aspirants over the deaths of three civil service aspirants earlier this month.

After the meeting, the students stated, “The meeting was fruitful. MCD is taking proper action on our demands that come within its purview. We have been assured that proper action will be taken. We will wait and watch.”

Sharad, a student who was part of the delegation, said, “We spoke with the MCD Commissioner just now. Around 20 students met him. We have been assured that work will be completed within a set time frame.”

He added, “But we would like to warn that if it doesn’t finish in the set time frame–the compensation amount and all the promises that have been made–we will gherao not just Old Rajinder Nagar but also Vidhan Sabha and other places. But we will wait for all the legal actions, lodging of FIR, and other legal procedures to be completed in 10-15 days.”

Three students died after the basement of a building housing a coaching center in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar was flooded following rains on Saturday evening. Earlier today, a delegation of students was taken by police bus to the MCD Commission Office for a meeting with officials in Delhi.

Additional Commissioner MCD Tariq Thomas interacted with the protesting students who were on a hunger strike against the deaths of 3 students after the basement of a coaching institute in Old Rajinder Nagar was flooded with rainwater on July 27. While speaking to the protesting students, Tariq Thomas said, “It is a failure for all of us and for me personally as well. It is a failure for us as officers that this incident has happened. This should not have happened. We should have done our duty better, there is no excuse.”

Meanwhile, Delhi Minister Atishi said on Wednesday that the interim inquiry report by the MCD has come.
