Srinagar’s Annual Muharram Procession Honors Karbala Martyrs
The streets of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir came alive as people participated in the annual procession to pay homage to the martyrs of Karbala on the 8th of Muharram. This significant event follows a traditional route from Guru Bazar to Dalgate.
The procession, marked by mournful chants and prayers, sees participants dressed in black attire, solemnly remembering the sacrifices made by Imam Hussain and his followers. The route passes through Budshah Kadal and M.A. Road, culminating in a gathering at Dalgate where sermons and speeches are delivered.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri noted the improved arrangements this year, including better drinking water and health facilities. He credited the peace process for creating an environment conducive to these improvements.
Kashmir Zone Inspector General of Police VK Birdi mentioned the extensive security measures and specific route designated for the procession. A traffic advisory was also issued to minimize disruption for the rest of the city’s residents. Organizers deployed volunteers to assist with the event.
