Sri Lanka’s Spinners Lead to Historic Series Win Against India

Colombo [Sri Lanka], August 7: Sri Lanka’s spinners became India’s worst nightmare in their first bilateral series defeat against Sri Lanka since 1997. The spinners took full advantage of the turning conditions in Colombo, leading to India’s downfall.

India lost 27 wickets to spin in the ODI series, the most by any team in a bilateral ODI series with a maximum of three matches. Throughout the series, Indian batters struggled to chase targets between 240-250 runs.

In the first game, which ended in a draw, Sri Lanka’s spinners picked up nine wickets. In the second game, Jeffrey Vandersay’s six-wicket haul and skipper Charith Asalanka’s three wickets left India in disarray.

Before the third ODI, no Indian middle-order batter had managed to score an aggregate of 40 runs. India relied heavily on skipper Rohit Sharma and Axar Patel. In the final match, Dunith Wellalage’s five-wicket spell and contributions from Jeffrey Vandersay and Maheesh Theekshana led to a 110-run victory for Sri Lanka, sealing a 2-0 series win over the number one ODI team.
