Sri Lanka’s Praveen Jayawickrama Charged by ICC for Anti-Corruption Breaches
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has charged Sri Lankan cricketer Praveen Jayawickrama with three breaches of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. The charges include:
- Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received to carry out fixing in future International matches.
- Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received to approach another player for fixing in the 2021 Lanka Premier League.
- Obstructing the investigation by deleting messages related to the corrupt approaches and offers.
According to the ICC, Jayawickrama has 14 days from August 6, 2024, to respond to the charges. Jayawickrama has played five Test matches, taking 25 wickets, with a career-best performance of 6/92 in his debut against Bangladesh. He has also played five One Day Internationals (ODIs) and five T20 Internationals (T20Is), taking five and two wickets respectively.
This news comes after Sri Lanka’s historic 2-0 ODI series win against India, led by Rohit Sharma, marking the first time in 27 years that Sri Lanka has won an ODI series against India.
