Sreeja Akula Becomes India’s Top Table Tennis Player
Indian table tennis player Sreeja Akula has reached a career-best world ranking of No. 24 after winning the WTT Contender Lagos title. This achievement makes her India’s highest-ranked player in Women’s Singles, surpassing Manika Batra.
Historic Win in Lagos
Last week, Sreeja Akula made history by becoming the first Indian to win the WTT Contender singles title. In the thrilling final match held in Lagos, she defeated Ding Yijie of China 4-1 with scores of 10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8, and 11-6.
Double Victory
In addition to her singles victory, Sreeja also won the women’s doubles title with her teammate Archana Kamath. They defeated fellow Indian players Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade 3-0 in the final match.
Other Rankings
Manika Batra, who was previously India’s top-ranked player, has now fallen to 29th place. Ayhika Mukherjee, a backup player for the Indian team heading to the 2024 Paris Olympics, has risen 48 spots to rank 92nd in the latest ITTF rankings.
