SpiceJet’s Market Share Drops to 2.3% in India, IndiGo Leads with 62.4%

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has reported that SpiceJet’s market share in India’s domestic aviation market has fallen to 2.3% as of August 2024. This is a significant drop from its 5.6% share in January 2024.

During the January-August 2024 period, airlines in India carried 1054.66 lakh passengers, a 4.82% increase from the same period last year, which saw 1006.16 lakh passengers. On a monthly basis, the number of passengers carried increased by 5.70%.

IndiGo continues to dominate the market with a 62.4% share, followed by Air India at 14.7%, Air India Express at 5.3%, and Vistara at 10.3%.

In August, SpiceJet received the highest number of passenger complaints at 16.1%, compared to Air India’s 1.5% and IndiGo’s 0.2%. Most complaints were related to flight issues, baggage, and refunds.

Regarding On-Time Performance (OTP) at major metro airports like Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, Akasa Air performed the best with a 71.3% OTP, followed by Vistara at 68.6%, IndiGo at 66%, and SpiceJet at 31%.

The DGCA report analyzed the reasons for delays, attributing most to ‘reactionary’ causes, followed by Air Traffic Control (ATC) and operations-related issues. In August 2024, a total of 1031 passenger-related complaints were received, with the highest number against SpiceJet (437), followed by Air India (294) and IndiGo (135). All complaints have been addressed and closed.
