South African Police Bust Major Drug Lab, Arrest Four Including Two Mexicans

In Cape Town, South Africa, four individuals, including two Mexican citizens, were arrested by South African police after discovering a drug manufacturing lab on a farm in Groblersdal. The lab contained chemicals like crystal meth and acetone, valued at USD 2 billion.

Police Investigation

The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as Hawks, conducted the search following intelligence about suspicious activities. They found large amounts of chemicals needed to create illegal substances in four buildings on the property.

International Involvement

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it had not received consular notification but was in contact with local authorities to learn more about the issue and the involvement of the Mexican citizens.

Legal Proceedings

The suspects are scheduled to appear in Groblersdal Magistrate’s court on Monday to face charges of producing, distributing, and possessing illegal drugs.

Background

Earlier this year, police confirmed the closure of 131 drug labs across South Africa since 2019. Reports by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) highlight South Africa as a significant meth consumer market and an attractive drug transit country due to its porous borders and connections to other trading nations.
