Sonam Wangchuk Ends Climate Protest After Talks with Delhi Police
In New Delhi, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and his team from Ladakh concluded their protest and fast after discussions with the Delhi Police. The Delhi High Court had previously sought a response from the police regarding a plea to allow Wangchuk’s climate protest at Jantar Mantar. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that Wangchuk ended his fast, leading to the withdrawal of the petition. The court, led by Justice Prathiba M Singh and Justice Amit Sharma, acknowledged the withdrawal, as Advocate Rajiv Mohan confirmed the petition was no longer pursued.
The original plea aimed to secure permission for a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar to raise environmental awareness and demand Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. The Apex Body Leh had approached the court to allow Wangchuk and other ‘Padyatris’ to hold a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar or another suitable location, emphasizing their rights under Articles 19(1)(a) and 19(1)(b) of the Indian Constitution.
Approximately 200 participants embarked on a peaceful Padyatra from Leh, Ladakh, to New Delhi, covering over 900 kilometers in 30 days, to highlight the ecological and cultural issues in Ladakh and the Himalayan region. However, the Delhi Police rejected their request for a protest at Jantar Mantar, citing “no valid grounds,” which the petitioners claimed infringed on their fundamental rights.
