Somnath Bharti Challenges Bansuri Swaraj’s Election Win in Delhi High Court
New Delhi, July 22: The Delhi High Court has scheduled a hearing for August 13 regarding a plea by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti. Bharti is challenging the election victory of BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the New Delhi constituency.
The Bench of Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora postponed the matter to August 13 due to typographical errors in the petition, which need correction. Bharti’s plea alleges ‘corrupt practices’ in the election process and requests records from the Returning Officer for the May 25, 2024, elections.
According to the petition, Bharti received 3,74,815 votes, while Swaraj secured 4,53,185 votes. The plea claims that Raaj Kumar Anand, initially a candidate from AAP, resigned and joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) under pressure from investigative agencies. Anand later joined the BJP on July 10, 2024, raising suspicions about his role in the election.
The petition also alleges that BJP workers distributed money and materials to voters and that Bansuri Swaraj’s campaign used religious lines to seek votes, which is prohibited.
