Smog and Pollution Crisis in New Delhi

Air Quality Deteriorates

New Delhi is facing a severe pollution crisis with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropping to 349, categorized as ‘Very Poor’. Residents like Kushal Chaudhary, a college student, are experiencing breathing difficulties due to the pollution. Despite a ban on firecrackers, many were used during Karwa Chauth, worsening the air quality. The government is urged to take action to control the pollution.

Pollution Levels Across the City

The AQI in Shakurpur and surrounding areas was recorded at 346, while India Gate and Safdarjung recorded AQIs of 309 and 307, respectively, all categorized as ‘Very Poor’.

Yamuna River Pollution

Toxic foam has been observed on the Yamuna River, highlighting the pollution levels. Environmentalist Vimlendu K Jha criticized the environmental governance in Delhi, pointing out that the primary responsibility for the river’s pollution lies with the city itself. Professor Sachchida Nand Tripathi explained that the froth is caused by surfactants from untreated wastewater.
