Six staff members of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) were killed in Israeli airstrikes at a school-turned-shelter in Gaza, the United Nations reported. The school in Nuseirat, sheltering around 12,000 displaced people, has been hit five times since the conflict began 11 months ago.

UNRWA stated, ‘This is the highest death toll among our staff in a single incident. Among those killed was the manager of the UNRWA shelter and other team members providing assistance to displaced people. Sincere condolences to their families and loved ones.’

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attacks, calling them ‘dramatic violations of international humanitarian law’ and urged for an immediate stop to the violence. UN Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini also deplored the killings, noting that at least 220 UNRWA staff have been killed in the conflict.

Meanwhile, health workers in northern Gaza are continuing efforts to vaccinate young children against polio. Over 81,600 children have been vaccinated so far, with a goal to reach 640,000 children in a two-round campaign.
