Sitaram Yechury’s Family Donates His Body for Medical Research at AIIMS Delhi
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has praised the family of the late CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury for their noble decision to donate his entire body for medical research. Yechury passed away on September 12, and his remains were brought to AIIMS on Saturday.
Dr. Rima Dada’s Statement
Dr. Rima Dada, Professor in charge of media and the Department of Anatomy at AIIMS Delhi, expressed her gratitude for the donation. She explained that body donation is a noble deed that aids in the research and teaching of medical students. The body is embalmed to preserve it for educational purposes, allowing both MBBS and senior medical students to practice before performing major surgeries.
Dr. Dada further explained that AIIMS keeps 50 to 60 bodies in their tanks, using 10-12 bodies each year for teaching. Families are allowed to see the embalmed body for two to three days before it is used for research. Afterward, the bodies are cremated with full rituals at Nigam Bodh Ghat.

Several political leaders paid tribute to Sitaram Yechury. Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav described Yechury as a great leader who built bridges between different ideologies. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot highlighted Yechury’s unique personality and influence across various parties. Congress leader Sachin Pilot called Yechury’s passing a significant loss to the nation, praising him as a fine thinker and excellent human being. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha also paid homage, noting Yechury’s dedication to raising the voices of the poor and deprived.
