New Delhi, September 12: Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), passed away on Thursday afternoon at the age of 72 after battling pneumonia. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.

Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, expressed his sorrow, calling Yechury ‘an old personal friend and committed supporter of the Russian-Indian friendship.’ Alipov shared a photo on X, expressing his sadness over Yechury’s untimely demise.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his condolences on X, describing Yechury as ‘a leading light of the Left’ and ‘an effective parliamentarian.’ Modi extended his thoughts to Yechury’s family and admirers.

President Droupadi Murmu highlighted Yechury’s influential voice in politics, noting his ability to win friends across party lines. She extended her heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah remarked that Yechury’s passing is a loss to the political sphere and offered his condolences to Yechury’s family and friends.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh remembered Yechury as a friend and seasoned parliamentarian, recalling their numerous interactions. He extended his condolences to Yechury’s bereaved family and supporters.

Yechury’s Life and Career

Sitaram Yechury was born on August 12, 1952, in Chennai. He studied at Delhi University for his undergraduate degree and completed his post-graduation at Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was appointed as the General Secretary of the CPI(M) in 2015, succeeding Prakash Karat.
