Sindh PPP’s Nisar Ahmed Khuhro Opposes New Canals on River Indus
Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, the President of the Sindh Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Chairman of the Sindh Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee, has made it clear that the party will not support any projects aimed at building additional canals on the River Indus. Speaking at a press conference at the Bilawal House Media Cell, Khuhro emphasized the PPP’s opposition to controversial water reservoir projects.
He noted that the Sindh Assembly had already passed a resolution against such initiatives. The proposal to construct new canals has created a critical situation, with two of the six proposed canals planned for Sindh. Khuhro reiterated that without surplus water, there is no justification for new canals, as they would worsen the water shortage in Sindh.
Khuhro also mentioned past attempts to implement corporate farming under the Green Pakistan initiative, which required significant land and water resources. He highlighted that similar projects were halted due to public opposition. Sindh has expressed its concerns during a recent Capital Development Working Party meeting.
Khuhro recalled historical opposition to projects like the Kalabagh Dam and urged the federal government to address over 150 illegal water-lifting pumps between the Punjnad and Guddu Barrage.
