Sikyong Penpa Tsering Discusses Tibet’s Future

Event at India International Centre

On October 22, Sikyong Penpa Tsering of the Central Tibetan Administration spoke at the India International Centre Annexe in New Delhi. The event, titled “Charting Tibet’s Future: The Resolve Tibet Act, Strategies in Exile, His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Legacy, and India’s Role,” was organized by the Foundation for Non-violent Alternatives (FNVA).

Importance of the Resolve Tibet Act

Sikyong Tsering highlighted the significance of the Resolve Tibet Act and the Tibet Policy and Support Act. He stated that these acts are crucial for holding China accountable for human rights violations in Tibet and advocating for Tibetan rights and autonomy.

Environmental Concerns

The Tibetan plateau, known as the “Roof of the World” and “Asia’s Water Tower,” is vital for rivers like the Yarlung Tsangpo and Mekong. Sikyong expressed concerns over China’s diversion of these water resources, which threatens the environment and the livelihoods of millions in Asia. He called for transparency from China regarding hydrological data to prevent environmental disasters.

Tibet’s Sovereignty

Sikyong Tsering addressed misconceptions about Tibet’s sovereignty, asserting that Tibet maintained self-rule after 1912 and was never directly ruled by a foreign country. He emphasized the need to reshape global understanding of Tibet’s history.

Call for Sustainable Practices

He criticized China’s management of Tibetan rivers, urging sustainable practices to protect the region’s ecology and the livelihoods of millions. The event concluded with a Q&A session, focusing on Tibet’s political situation and the CTA’s strategies.
